What the numbers mean
Wear layers are measured in millimetres (mm) or mils. Thicker generally means tougher: a 0.3mm layer suits light residential use, while 0.5mm and above is better for busy homes and commercial spaces.
Match it to your traffic
- Bedrooms and low-traffic rooms: 0.3mm is usually fine
- Living areas and family homes: 0.5mm for peace of mind
- Retail, offices, and commercial: 0.55mm+ commercial grade
Don't judge by thickness alone
Overall board thickness affects feel and how it handles subfloor imperfections, but it's the wear layer that drives longevity. A thick board with a thin wear layer can still scratch easily.
